Short Snipet-Ugly heart

I just returned a text from my girlfriend, Erin, asking how I'm doing. I wanted to text back, "grt, thx," but I decided to get real with her so I guess I will get real on the world wide web while I'm at it.


Ok, I'll make this short and sweet 'cause it ain't pretty. {did I actually type the word ain't?!}

This is what I texted back: I've got an ugly heart right now. Please pray.

Yep, it's U.G.L.Y.

~pride
~jealousy
~anger
~did I mention pride?

I hate this about myself that this ugly heart condition bubbles up out of nowhere. But really...is it out of nowhere?

That is where I rely on Psalm 24 which says that those with a clean {not ugly} heart will stand in God's holy presence. Those who do not succumb to ugly, false, sinful thoughts and actions will be blessed by God's sweet mercy. Here is the cool part: those who seek His face will find Him; even if they seek Him while loaded down with the ugly junk.

I know that I know that I know that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I also know that I know that I know that Jesus nailed my ugly stuff to the Cross when He died for me {and YOU!}.

But, what I have lately realized is that I must find constant focus on Christ every minute of every day in order to stave off this junk that festers in my heart.

This means that as I go about my day, I take a hard look at the condition of my heart and PROMPTLY confess the ugly. This also means that my thoughts, words and actions are filtered through a sift that reflects the truths of the Bible. Often times, the ugly comes from believing lies that I conjure up in my head--lies that I have no business believing as they are contrary to what I read in verses like Psalm 24.

So this is what I'm going to do with my ugly:

Find Focus on Him. Constantly check in with Jesus. The moment the ugly heart surfaces its well...ugliness, He will redirect my focus back to His beauty.

{NOTE: after I posted this, another opportunity came around for ugliness to bubble up. Another girlfriend gave me this verse. Whew! God knew what I needed to hear from His word!}

Isaiah 26:3 You keep in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you {FIND FOCUS!} because he trusts in you.

Well, friend, I feel I've been there, done that and got the not so cute t-shirt! :) I wear it proudly {as my past has shaped in part who I am presently} but would hate for you to have to.

Money and the Four Letter Word

DEBT. An ugly word. You are not alone if you find yourself uttering this four letter word.





"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”( Matthew 6:24)




This is Jesus speaking to his disciples and directly to you and me about the love of money and elevating it to a place in our heart higher than Him. Quite a dangerous place to be, according to him. Often times, with the love of money, comes the shackles of debt.




Maybe you find yourself in a similar spot as Heather. ( I found this in a news story)



"Heather Schopp is a chiropractor in California dealing every day with her clients' physical pain. But her own pain is financial: At age 29 she is more than $170,000 in debt.

"I think about it every day," Schopp says. "I mean, I lay in bed, thinking in my head, 'Okay, how much money do I have? What will I have to do tomorrow? Do I have to buy anything?' "

Schopp is part of the exploding number of young women who are rapidly turning into "Generation Debt." These twenty-somethings are weighed down by hundreds of thousands of dollars of credit card bills and student loans.

Schopp works two jobs, six days a week, just to make ends meet and keep pace with her debt, but it is still not enough."


There is no amount of debt that Jesus can not handle. Jesus actually says in the book of Luke that there is nothing that is impossible for God. (see Luke 1:37)


Take a look back at the verse above from Matthew 6:24. It is actually the love and worship of money that leads to debt. The greek word for “serve” in this passage is “douleuo” which has an undertone of “being in bondage to, to be a slave to” money. Ouch! Before we fall into times of debt, we often become servants of money. Whatever your present financial circumstance, I encourage you to find financial counseling and work diligently to pay down this debt as soon as possible. The longer we are in bondage to money, the more obsessed we become and less focused on worship our King, the One who takes away our bondage.

In fact lets start now with a short exercise to examine our spending habits. We can take small steps in changing our habits that will make a big impact on our debt.



Make a list of the top five purchases that you would call guilty pleasures, or unnecessary to every day living. Beside the item, write the approximate number of times you purchase this item over four months. Then, write down the approximate dollar amount of each item.

Here is my list:

Cheap PINK Shiny Lipgloss: 3 times, $8.00 each



Coffee from coffee shop: 10 times, $5.00 each



Books, Books and more books: 4 times, $15.00 each




Quarts of Ben&Jerry’s Icecream: 8 times, $6.00




Cute, funky, cheap shoes or jewelry: 10, $19.00




Your list might consist of many different types of things like makeup, videos, iTunes or extra trips out to dinner. As long as they are not necessities, these items qualify to go on the list. Now, multiply each item by the number of times you purchase and then add it all up for your grand guilty pleasure total.



Over the course of four months my grand guilty pleasure total is $372!!!



Yikes, over the course of a year, I spend about $1,488 on stuff that doesn’t fill that momentary void of emotional spending. Can you imagine if we made a list of all the items on our guilty pleasure list?!



When we worship Him instead of money paying down the debt becomes easier. I would venture to say that $1,488 would make a nice dent in a long standing credit card bill or a student loan. Going forward, lets rethink our need to purchase and redirect that need toward worshipping our God. Nothing is impossible for Him...nothing.

One Sister to Another Part 3-It's Just Business

This is part one of a series of ideas I want to share from my PAST experience. I’m a girlfriend who wants to share so that you, my friends, might learn from me rather than deal with the heartache yourself.


I've been in the corporate world for going on eight years now and I've learned a few things along the way:

How to apply the long last lipstick that will get me through a day's worth of sales calls.

How to apply the right amount of self tanner to look like I'm wearing panty hose when I'm actually not.

How to apply said tanner sans streaking so the "panty hose" look real.

How to close the sale before they realize I'm actually closing the sale.

How to look cute and smile while still coming across as professional.

But the biggest lesson I have learned is that ITS JUST BUSINESS.

The coporate world is full of self promoters who scratch their way up the career ladder. I have witnessed my share of those who broadcast their wins loud enough for their boss's boss's boss to hear. I have also witnessed my share of those who distort the magnitude of their latest project to plump up their end of year review. To be honest, I know these people are rewarded and I'm not going to say they probably don't deserve it either. But at what cost?

The cost of self promotion for me is the extra energy it takes to make known my accomplishments when frankly, they speak for themselves. The cost of poking my head out to play Nosey McNoserson while investigating my coworker's latest and greatest for the only outcome of doing it better myself is just too tiring. How do I know this? I've been there. It got me nowhere.

A friend of mine told m something a year ago I've applied to my corporate job. She advised me to "keep my head down, work hard and God will recognize me as He sees fit."

Keep my head down.

Work hard on the task at hand.

Don't worry about what everyone else is doing.

God will bless it.

Just as Jesus said He was about His Father's business in Luke 2:49 You too are about your Father's business in the corporate world. A true success that I believe God honors is when we focus on what we can do at that moment and do it with excellence. The business world is full of fakers, so being about your Father's business with authenticity, honesty and humility already sets you up to navigate the career path with success.

Keep your head down, sister!

One Sister to Another Part 2-Friendship

This is part of a series of ideas I want to share from my own experience. I’m a girlfriend who wants to share so that you, my friends, might learn from me rather than deal with the heartache yourself.


This topic is so tender on my heart that I am almost tempted to scratch the whole post. But, here it goes anyway...


I expect too much from my friends.

There I said it.


I pour out my heart to those I love. Words of encouragement, prayer, support, advice, etc. It is my love language and I enjoy it immensely. I love to see the smile on their face. The relief when they know they are not alone. Like I said, its my love language.

Because this is how I express my love, I feel loved when the same is done for me. The trouble is I expect, rather, I appreciate or long for my friends to return that expression of love in kind. When they don't, my heart hurts.

This is selfish of me.

I get that.

I'm working through it...


Through this soul searching {which is ongoing} the Lord keeps yelling out to me:

Get over yourself! I AM enough. I AM your friend. I AM your LORD. I AM and that is all you need.

Ok, Lord. I get it...sort of.

As I am working through this, my first thought was to completely give it up. No more Mr. Nice Guy {or gal}. I'm not going to put myself out there only to be hurt again. But yet, what kind of opportunity would I be missing to be used by God to encourage a friend who truly needs to hear something uplifting?

So as I continue to be there for my girlfriends, I've decided not to expect from them what only God can give me.

My El Shaddai

HE is MORE than enough.

Ephesians 3:19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.



This is raw, people. Again. I'm seconds away from NOT hitting publish on this post. Yet, I want to encourage you to let God be your I AM. Let Him be your friend. What ever overflows from that blessing, pour it out on your earthly friends. Be used by Him to nurture those that you love.

One Sister to Another Part 1

This is part one of a series of ideas I want to share from my PAST experience. I’m a girlfriend who wants to share so that you, my friends, might learn from me rather than deal with the heartache yourself. {disclaimer: I haven’t dated in years. In His beautiful mercy, God brought an amazing man into my life to be my husband. But...BUT...it wasn’t until after I dealt with the woes written below that I was able to see that there are great, godly men out there. So hold tight, sister...}




Most of us have seen the recent movie, He’s Just Not That Into You. I reluctantly rented this chick flick as I was not too crazy to be reminded of the many guys I dated in the past who well...were just not that into me. You know the situation. You meet a guy while out with your friends and you both connect over your common obsession of the television show, 24. I mean, who wouldn’t want to connect with a guy who not only resembles Jack Bauer, but also has that low-toned, mysterious growly voice like Jack, too. You give him your number and part ways hopeful that this guy will be THE ONE.




And you wait. And wait. And wait.


Oh the dating games women play.




I most identified with Gigi from He’s Just Not That Into You. There is a scene where Gigi analyzes a recent conversation she had with a guy she met the Friday night before. Her co-worker supports her by paying attention to every minute detail of every word the guy said before the night was over. Then, they both decide to skip the rule of waiting for the guy to call her. Gigi sets out to construct a perfect “follow up” phone call. The scene is quite comical as Gigi, armed with her script, picks up the phone with a nervous grin on her face only to find the call went straight to voicemail. She quickly improvises (she did not write a script for a voicemail call) and flubbs up the whole thing. After watching this scene, I was tempted to pause the movie and go raid the fridge for some comfort food consisting of an entire quart of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. You see, I totally saw myself in Gigi and no amount of ice cream could erase the many moments of angst I experienced while dating in the past.




Later on in the movie Gigi tells her girlfriend, “We are all programmed to believe that if a guy acts like a total jerk that means he likes you.”


Games. Games. Games. They drive us crazy.




Now, before this turns into a man bashing session, let me just say that women are just as guilty of this insanity. You can’t tell me that you have never played “hard to get” or flirted with a guy you weren’t interested in just for the fun and attention. Yes, ladies, we too have perpetuated this standard of dating. But, I hope you will allow me to make a statement as a girl who has been there, done that, and got the not so cute t-shirt. Life is too short to get caught up in the anxiety of “will he call?” or “does he really love me?” There are other things we can do with our time rather than obsessively checking our cell phone to make sure we didn’t miss THE CALL. Trust me, years ago I wasted countless hours of my life in this very scenario. Can I share a few pointers that I learned along the way?



**If he really likes you, he will pursue you.

**If he really likes you, he will be interested in what you like and want to get to know you.

**If he really likes you he will RESPECT you.




Here is the big one....


**If he plays games...It is time to move on.




I know that sounds harsh but it is the truth, my sweet sister. Hold out for the guy who treats you like the princess you are. This may mean that you are with out a date on Saturday night for a while. But, here is a truth that I want you to cling to when you feel depressed about your love life: The King is enthralled with your beauty! Psalm 45:11 NIV



The King, Jesus, pursues you.


The King, Jesus, loves you with a fiery passion.


The King, Jesus, will not play games or toy with your heart.


God gives us a template of what our dating and future married life should look like. He doesn’t want you to be riddled with anxiety. He hurts when your heart is trampled on. And, He will encourage you not to settle for anything less than a man who respects and cares for you.



He-Jesus- is just that into you.


So lets encourage each other. If you're a single sister, share your thoughts. If you're not a single sister, share some "words of wisdom."

Do you ever feel kind of frumpy when you go shopping? I totally do. Regardless of the cute outfit I already have on, I always feel wrinkled and worn compared to the pristine articles of clothing that are nicely pressed and displayed in the best of lighting at my favorite retail stores.

Just like my old clothing that I long to trade with new, fabulous finds at the LOFT, there are old and frumpy memories and thought processes that I long to trade away now that I am set and secure in Jesus.

It all starts in the mind for me. I can twist and turn old memories of mistakes I've made into torment. The crazy thing is, I know those stupid things I've done in the past are long gone and forgiven. Yet, the torment continues and they run through my mind over and over again as if I have hit repeat on a really bad song on my iPod.

So here is what God gave me to replace those thoughts:

Ephesians 4:22-24 (New International Version)

22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.



I love the words: PUT ON. It takes me back to the original analogy of shopping {smiles}. God lays out this new clothing of holiness and righteousness like those oh so cute cardigans I saw in the LOFT the other day-pressed and folded nicely. They are there for the taking, but we have to do our part and actually PUT THEM ON. In order to put on the new self, we must first literally take off the old frumpy memories and mistakes. Then the fun begins...



As you are putting on your new attitude; your new, shiny thoughts, see if this mental picture doesn't help.



You know the little shimmy you do as your slipping into a sundress? Or what about the squat to stretch out the newly-out-of-the-dryer blue jeans? That is what I visualize when I PUT ON the righteousness and holiness that Ephesians promises me. Somehow that mental image snaps me back out of the old and frumpy and into the new and shiny. But, I have to continually PUT IT ON for my mind is my worst enemy.



So, I've decided to run with this thought process and see where it takes me. I know that the promises in the Bible are powerful and applicable and I will stand on what I know: Christ gave me a beautiful wardrobe of fresh/new memories and thoughts to run through my mind when He died on the cross for me {and you}. I'm going to take those old, frumpy ones and lay them at His feet.

Just Show Up and Get Naked

This week I feel like I bore my soul for the entire world to see; I even feel a bit naked. My inspirational entry runs on She Seeks which gets down to the dirty details of where my faith was about two months ago. For someone who puts herself out there as encouraging others to LIVE OUT their faith, it is not fun to admit that I too have had times of Blah faith.


But I hope that in my vulnerability, someone else might be free to touch base with her own Blah faith and take steps to do something about it. If one small iota of what I wrote encourages someone else, then every ounce of discomfort I felt while typing my blah faith woes is paid back in rejoicing.

Lest you think that I am fishing for compliments on my writing style or that I am begging for affirmation, please hear me on this. Ministry can only be affective and effective if we are willing to reveal glimpses of the dark spots in our soul. Whether we are writing weekly blogs of encouragement, organizing clothing at the local homeless shelter or taking the youth group for ice cream, serving others must start with relationship. Them relating to us and us relating to them.

What better way to build relationship than to open up and share your story? Pull back the veil that conceals your human-ness. And, dare I say, get a little bit naked.

A Note to My She Speaks Girlfriends

This is something the Lord put on my heart to encourage and challenge my girlfriends who are attending She Speaks. ***But*** If you have now Idea what She Speaks is (www.proverbs31.org) and you are a woman, this might just speak to you as well!



I could squeal with delight at the thought of seeing my friends this upcoming weekend. My heart also flutters with excitement at the expectation of what God has in store because we all were preordained to attend She Speaks this very year. Our desire to serve Him via speaking, writing and leading is what binds us together as we make the trek to Charlotte, North Carolina. But, I am afraid that there is one thing that might very well derail my opportunity to hear from God and connect with my fellow ministry women.

Comparison.

Yep, I said it and I hope that you know exactly what I mean when you read that one potent word. I can be all prayed up and all dolled up as I walk through the doors, but comparison is the one thing that will turn my heart away from God and toward an obsession of “I’m just not enough.” Why is it that we, as women, do this to ourselves? I see a darling sister of mine in the most adorable outfit and that very instant my insecurity over takes me. This insecurity coming from comparison can darn well take my focus off of God and the ministry He has set for me.

Please don’t hear me say that it is bad to look cute and perfectly coordinate your outfit with your shade of lip gloss. I’m the first gal to get a thrill out of my ballet flats that go so nicely with my little pearl necklace, I really am. The fact is, no matter how well put together we are, there will always be someone one in the room that is prettier, has better hair or has that handbag that we’ve been coveting for weeks now. But, that woman I am comparing myself to is doing the very same thing with someone else. Isn’t that wild?

I think I will lean on Colossians 3:2-3 “Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
I don’t want to miss what God has to tell me this weekend because I can’t get over myself and my insecurity, do you?

So, if I get the awesome chance to meet you this weekend and I compliment you on your super cute necklace, please know that I am celebrating you and how darling you are rather than allowing my insecurity to ruin the moment. Will you do the same my friend?

RePost: Get a Grip

If you are clicking on this site from She Seeks, I am so happy that you stopped by. This is a blog post that I repurposed as it fits so well with my topic from this week's She Seeks Inspirational Entry.


The other day I posted about clinging so hard to Christ for strength that you had white knuckles. This concept really stuck with me and the Lord gave me more thoughts on this subject.

Get a Grip (this came from my lovely mom, by the way)
When you are gripping Christ so hard, there is no way that you are holding on to other things that might bind you and hold you back from that abundant life He promises in John 10:10. These things might be fear, anger, depression, obsession about body image, insecurity, addictions and so on. When we grip tightly to these binding things we, they don't let us go. It is hard to be free!
But, the only thing that frees us from that captivity is holding fast and firm to our Lord and Savior, Jesus. You can be free from all that junk and then be free to live the life that He planned for you.

How would you like to live a life that is full of joy, peace, fulfillment and hope. Do you have a dream that He has given you for your life? You are free to live that dream when you cling to Christ.

Take a look at Psalm 63:7-8 (The Message) in closing:
Because you've always stood up for me,
I'm free to run and play.
I hold on to you for dear life,
and you hold me steady as a post.

Resurrection Living

Hey Friends,


If you are stopping here for the first times coming from She Seeks-welcome! I want to continue our conversation from my She Seeks {inspirational entry} about stress in light of Easter and the Resurrection.

Stress is no fun and it robs us of the joy, peace, patience, hope and so much more that God promises us when we chose to follow Him. We don't have to live with the chains of our daily stress because when Jesus died on the cross, He took our pain, sins and even our stress to the grave with Him. I believe that Jesus sweat blood in the Garden of Gethsemane because He was literally feeling the pressure and recounting the past sins and future sins/ pain of EVERY single person who believed Him to be the Christ. On that cross, I believe that Jesus took on my personal stress and your personal stress. The emotional pain He felt had to be just as excruciating as that of the physical pain of crucifixion.

So, where does this leave us now? Three days later, on Easter morning, Jesus conquered death and rose to sit as King of Kings and Lord of Lords in Heaven. All of our stress, sin and pain were conquered. God doesn't promise that in this lifetime stress will cease to exist but rather, when we hand it all over to Him and lean on His strength, He can and will conquer our troubles.
Day to day, we must recognize Him as our Risen King Victorious. If we believe that He died and conquered death, why in the world wouldn't Jesus be able to conquer our everyday stress?

Take sometime right now to praise Jesus as YOUR King who cares about you and your stress. Nothing is too small or too big to bring before the King, the Risen Victorious King.

Would you ever admit to duplicity? {no...not talking about the movie here!} Probably not, I would venture to say. Here is the definition, please take special note of the second definition:


Duplicity:noun:
1 : contradictory doubleness of thought, speech, or action; especially : the belying of one's true intentions by deceptive words or action
2 : the quality or state of being double or twofold

You know when you were in highschool and the biggest put down was to be called "two-faced?" That is basically what I am getting at. In America, this is a problem among Christians, we are "two-faced" and our lives are not reflective completely and wholeheartedly to what we say we believe. I was hit in my "two faced" forehead with this when I bounced the definition of duplicity off of Jeremiah 32:38-39:

They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.



Please know that I am pointing my finger right back at myself with this post. But, I just want to challenge my fellow Christians to think about our lives. Do you compartmentalize your faith to just your Christian friends, Sunday morning or Wendesday night Life Groups? Here is some data from Pew Research that perfectly illustrates what I am talking about:

Um...hello...do we see what is wrong with this picture?

You say you have conservative values...
But how did you vote in the last election (if you voted at all)?

You say want to live a pure and holy life as taught in the Bible and at church last sunday...
But, what do you fill your mind with while surfing the web or flipping the channels?

You say you believe in Jesus as your Savior...
But, is your life really changed by your beliefs?

Like I said, no condemnation here from me. These are some of the very things I have worked through in my own life. Did you notice in the verse above that God promises He will give us singleness of heart AND action? It is ours for the taking. period. I think this lifestyle of duplicity can be tiresome. Most of us know deep in our heart that our actions don't match up with what we profess and it slowly eats away at our conscience. God doesn't want us to live with this burden, but He does expect us to take the actions to live a whole hearted, sold out faith in Him. This takes work, trust me, I know. I have evaluated and re-evaluted my choices and actions over the years and I will continue to do so.

So for today, I encourage you to take time with the Lord asking Him to show you where you act "two-faced." He will not hit you over the head or wag a heavenly finger at your in condemnation, but He will show you where to start in your journey toward single-minded faith.

Book Review-The Vertical Self

I am loving this Booksneeze book review program as I just read The Vertical Self by Mark Sayers. Wow is all I can say. This book was written in a non-preachy tone with ideas that made me rethink how I see life, my faith and my Savior.


The main premise of the book was to look at living "horizontally" verses "vertically." Horizontal living means a life of me, myself and I while also trying to please the world while Vertical living focuses on glorifying God and living under His ultimate authority. Here are a few examples taken from a table in the book on page 19-20

Vertical vs Horizontal:
God as Judge vs Others as Judge
Holiness vs Status
Eternal vs Temporary
Delayed gratification vs Instant gratification
Work ethic vs Play ethic
Self discipline vs Self esteem
Facts vs Feelings

Are you getting the picture here? Would love to know if any of these ring true in your life-if you veer more torward the Horizontal than the Vertical in certain areas.

To take it one step further, Mark Sayers writes about how Christians can live a fragmented life as they go from Vertical to Horizontal depending on their location, the people they are with or when they are at work. This is called fragmented living meaning our beliefs are scattered all over the place depending on our circumstances. "One can have an evangelical Christian worldview, a secular sex life, an economic rationalist approach to money, a conservative vote and a liberal approach to humor." page 26 All I can say is this paragraph punched me in the gut and I am rethinking my approach to life. I want my entire existence to be consistent and consistently point toward the LORD!

Close Encounter

I want a close encounter with Jesus, don’t you? The concept sounds amazing, but it is a bit allusive. I mean, we can’t touch Jesus or see Him face to face, so how exactly do we encounter Him? All I know is that if I need a revival in my faith, more of His presence will do the trick. Maybe this passage in Mark will give us some perspective.

Mark 7:32-35

32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man.

33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!" ). 35At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

I had to stop to ponder this situation. {Sidebar: to get more out of the scripture, don’t just read it, ponder it. Break it down and put yourself in the scene} Just several passages before, Jesus simply touched the sick and lame or spoke healing over them. Why would Jesus pull the deaf man aside and put spit in his ears? Here are some possibilities that I came up with. I actually put myself in the place of the deaf man-take a look:

*Jesus knows this man’s heart and maybe this man doubted His ability to heal
--Jesus knows my heart and knows when I doubt Him, too!

*Jesus wanted a private moment with the man away from the noisy crowd
--Jesus wants a private moment with me away from the TV, internet and blackberry {distractions}

*Jesus knew the power of His touch when He stuck his finger in this man’s ear. He not only touched the deaf man’s ear, Jesus touched the depth of this man’s heart-whatever condition it might be in.
--The Lord doesn’t just go through the motions in my life. He knows when and how to get my attention. Sometimes I need His touch more than anything else.


Can you imagine how sweet a sound the man heard when Jesus said, “Be opened?” This man probably lived the majority of his life, if not all, in silence. What a wonder to experience to tune into Jesus’s gentle, yet powerful voice as the first sound he heard in ages. A voice that was not preaching to a large crowd, but speaking straight to this man’s heart in the most intimate way. He had a close encounter with Jesus.

We don’t know what followed this scene. We don’t know how the man lived out his close encounter. But, we do know how we will react when Jesus pulls us aside from our distractions, touches our hearts and speaks into our life. I don’t know about you, but I want to have a close encounter with Jesus EVERY day. This only happens when I come to Him ready, willing and vulnerable. Jesus knows the depths of your heart and just what kind of encounter with Him you need. Are you willing, ready and vulnerable?

Jesus! Touch our hearts and speak to our soul, “Be open!”

Book Review-The Selfless Gene




I am thrilled to be a part of a new program with Thomas Nelson called Booksneeze. It is a blogger review program and I hae access to their new books and get the opportunity to review them. So, this is the first book that I read for them.

The Selfless Gene, by Charles Foster

I have to be honest and say that I really wanted to like this book. It was promoted as a fair and balanced look at two opposing worldviews. But, as I continued to read, my blood pressure elevated with the turn of each page. Rather than have a fair and balanced approach looking at both evolution and creationism (or intelligent design), the author tries to convince the reader that both worldviews can conincide with each other and meet in the middle. To top it off, the creationist point of view comes off as ignorant and back woods-very offensive. While the author does not completely lift up evolution as final truth, he does show the pitfalls in this worldview. But, this does not make up for the fact that there is no way possible to work with both views and take both intelligent design and evolution and meld both into your own personal worldview. I can't say that I recommend this book.
